Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, one of the leading musicians of our time who has contributed to the development of the LA scene for many years, is a composer, arranger and orchestrator. He has released his long-awaited debut album, Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1, from Brainfeeder!
Through his various roles, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson has worked with many musicians, recorded for over 600 albums, films and TV shows, and performed thousands of live concerts around the world. His style crosses various genres, including jazz, classical, hip-hop, electronica, avant-garde and pop. Through his groundbreaking work Suite For Ma Dukes (2009), which reconstructed J. Dilla's works into a 60-piece orchestral work, his collaborations with longtime friend and collaborator Carlos Niño, and his work with Quartet Fantastico and the Miguel Atwood Ferguson Ensemble, he has earned the respect of artists and a wide range of music fans alike.
Deeply ingrained in the Los Angeles music scene, Miguel Atwood Ferguson has been one of the key people supporting the Brainfeeder family since the label was founded in 2008. He is also a close friend and longtime collaborator of Flying Lotus, the label's founder. Since 2010, he has participated in all four of Flying Lotus' albums, and has also participated in the soundtracks of Blade Runner: Blackout 2022, a Japanese-American co-production short sci-fi anime directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, and the Netflix original anime Yasuke. He has also contributed greatly to the work of artists on the label, such as Thundercat, Hiatus Kaiyote, Kamasi Washington, Gaslamp Killer, Salami Rose Joe Lewis, Brandon Coleman, and Teebs. It is fitting that Miguel, who has played such a vital role in the label for the past 15 years, will release his masterpiece, which took 12 years to complete, on Brainfeeder. Flying Lotus approached Miguel about releasing his work on his own label more than 10 years ago. Regarding releasing his work on Brainfeeder, Miguel said, "I love Los Angeles. I'm proud to be from here, and I want to contribute to Los Angeles."
Les Jardins Mystiques is a project to open up and share Miguel's musical world. It is also a place to showcase Miguel's elegant musicality, who plays various instruments such as violin, viola, cello, and keyboards, and his free-spirited dialogue with more than 50 musicians. The newly released album, Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1, is the first in a trilogy, running a total of 10.5 hours. The opening track, Kiseki, features legendary musician Beny Maupin, who also played on Miles Davis's masterpiece Bitches Brew, on bass clarinet. The guest musicians include Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, Domi & JD Beck, Jeff Parker, Carlos Niño, Austin Peralta, Lara Somogyi, Jamel Dean, Jamiah Williams, Bernice Travis II, De'Antoni Parks, Brandon Coleman, and Marcus Gilmore. Les
Jardins Mystiques reflects Miguel's philosophy that music is natural, a life force that is uninfluenced by anything. The titles of the songs on Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1 are taken from international languages and traditions, including Spanish, Swahili, Sanskrit, Ancient Greek, Japanese and Hebrew. The 52 songs, varying in length and style, have a wonderfully unconstrained flow throughout, while each piece unfolds its own mysterious world.
Throughout his illustrious career, Miguel has worked with a wide range of international artists across a wide range of genres, from legendary artists such as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Smokey Robinson and Arthur Verrocaï to mainstream heavyweights such as Rihanna, Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga, Dr. Dre, Mary J. Blige, will.i.am and Big Boi, as well as internationally acclaimed artists such as Bonobo, Lianne La Havas, Kaytranada, Moses Sumney, Seu Jorge, Common, The Roots, The Cinematic Orchestra, Jameah Williams, Shafiq Hussain, Adrian Younge & Ali Shahid Muhammad, Carlos Niño and Bilal.
